The article discusses didactic approaches to teaching grammar that have been developed in Polish language didactics since the end of the 18thcentury: grammatical-normative, system--grammatical and functional. Subsequent approaches are presented in the historical order, but the considerations focus on their main theoretical assumptions, areas of criticism of previous approaches and methodological solutions developed on these foundations. The approach adopted has been defined as the overriding principle of understanding the learning process.

The article offers a contribution to the interaction research in the foreign language teaching and learning. It starts with an overview of various research approaches to the foreign language teaching and learning, from the 60s to the present days. A multimodal analysis of an excerpt of videorecorded classroom interaction is then provided. The analysis is focused on several aspects of classroom participation and teaching sequences. Some implications of the present research for teachers' training are finally provided.

The constant search for suitable teaching materials to achieve the linguistic skills provided by a language teaching course, finds in authentic documents an important instrument for teaching foreign languages. The scientific literature attesting to the effectiveness of the authentic material is wide and consolidated; indeed, a text conceived by a native for a native, and, therefore, not developed for the sole purpose of teaching a foreign language, is intrinsically carrying a cultural richness and a linguistic variety, which are rarely present in any didactic artifact.
